Making the Most of the Lift-Off Network

The Lift-Off Community is full of tools to empower the independent filmmaker. Here's how to use the Lift-Off Global Community...

It is an often made complaint that it is not what you know but who you know, that gets you ahead in the world. Once you realise this you can turn it into your strength. Great film-making does not happen in isolation. The best projects are from collaborations where there is creative synergy. Film-making teams are often friends. Right now, near you, there is a team getting ready to make something that could be quite extraordinary. It is our mission to connect you to these people.

Welcome to the Lift-Off Community.

This guide will help to prompt you on the best practices when using the Community. It will help you to make the most of the opportunities that are on offer.

In this guide:

Using the community as a:

  1. Director
  2. Producer
  3. Actor
  4. Screenwriter
  5. Camera Department,
  6. Post Production,
  7. Art Dept

Pick up a camera. Shoot something. No matter how small, no matter how cheesy, no matter whether your friends and you sister star in it. Put your name on it as a director. Now you're a director. Everything after that you're just negotiating your budget and your fee.
-James Cameron

Intuition is the key to everything, in painting, filmmaking, business - everything. I think you could have an intellectual ability, but if you can sharpen your intuition, which they say is emotion and intellect joining together, then a knowingness occurs.

The wise screen writer is he who wears his second-best suit, artistically speaking, and doesn’t take things too much to heart. He should have a touch of cynicism, but only a touch. The complete cynic is as useless to Hollywood as he is to himself. He should do the best he can without straining at it. He should be scrupulously honest about his work, but he should not expect scrupulous honesty in return. He won’t get it. And when he has had enough, he should say goodbye with a smile, because for all he knows he may want to go back.

Most of the movies are working like, 'Information, cut, information, cut, information, cut' and for them, the information is just the story. For me, a lot of things [are] information - I try to involve, to the movie, the time, the space, and a lot of other things - which is a part of our life but not connecting directly to the story-telling. And I'm working on the same way - 'information, cut, information, cut,' but for me, the information is not only the story.
