How Romantis came to Lift-Off
Romantis came to Lift-Off organically through the Member's Network, when Laurence joined to submit this project. We immediately saw huge potential in this creative project, through the witty writing and quirky animation-style. After a look through the concept art provided by Laurence and Matisse, it was clear that this was a project ready to take to sale agents.
We will be taking Laurence and Matisse's Romantis as a concept to the market.
About the Writer - Laurence Rosier Staines
Laurence is an award-winning screenwriter, director and producer based between London and Sydney. He has written and developed feature screenplays for Jim Sharman (director, The Rocky Horror Picture Show) and Essential Media, as well as his own short films which have been accepted into more than a dozen international film festivals. His independent webseries Real Estate was viewed over 180,000 times in 2016. He has also written seven independent theatre shows and has recently directed interactive shows and events including You Can Have It All (Underbelly Arts Festival 2017), Wakefield: LIVE (Old 505 Theatre, 2017) and the festival Caldera (2018). In 2019 he was the recipient of a development grant from the Ian Potter Cultural Trust.
About the Animator - Matisse Gonzalez Jordan
Matisse is a Bolivian animator, illustrator and director who graduated in 2019 with a Diploma in Film and Media Studies (Animation Directing) from the Filmakademie Baden-Würtemberg. During her studies she worked with several studios all over the world—including BUCK Design in Australia, CELESTE in Argentina and WOODBLOCK in Germany—as a storyboarder, cell and 2D animator, designer and director. Since 2014 she has animated and directed four short films that have been selected in several international animation festivals, including the Ottawa.
International Animation Festival and the International Animation Festival Stuttgart.
Romantis
Logline: Sally and Anita are housemates in their late twenties — single, smart and sassy. But no one seems to notice that Sally is a praying mantis. Anita’s on a mission to get Sally laid. We follow Sally’s misadventures with bearded hipsters, pick-up artists and more as she is courted, goes on dates and then sexually devours her partners.
